For people, the 4th of July weekend is a fun time to celebrate America’s independence with our loved ones. But for our pets, it can be an incredibly stressful weekend with loud noises. Follow the tips below to keep your pet safe and calm during the 4th of July weekend.
Firework Safety Tips For Pets To Stay Safe And Calm On The 4th of July
Keep Dogs Away From Fireworks
Keeping dogs away from fireworks seems obvious. It may surprise you to see how many people bring their dogs along to 4th of July parties. The loud noises may scare your pet causing them to flee. The food served at 4th of July parties can be harmful and toxic to dogs, so keep it away from them.
Create A Safe Space Indoors.
During the time of fireworks, put your dog in a stress free environment away from windows where they feel safe. It’s best to use a crate or pen to keep them contained to one area. Put on a sound machine or a tv to help block out the sounds of fireworks. Consider staying home with your pet as they look to their owner for reassurance when they feel stressed.
Exercise Your Dog Prior & Create Distractions During The Fireworks
Prior to your barbecue or pool party, take your dog for a long walk or run. During the fireworks, occupy them with interactive toys, chews or a kong stuffed with their favorite treats. This may help keep your dog distracted from the loud noises.
Use Calming products & Thunder Shirts To Keep Them Calm
Prior to the holidays, speak to your veterinarian about calming products to aid in the anxiety caused by fireworks. Your vet may prescribe medications such as Xanax or encourage natural treatments such as CBD oil. A thunder shirt or tight shirt is a great addition to calming products.
Update Your Dog’s Tags
Your dog may still flee your home even after doing all of the above tips. Prepare for the worst case scenario by updating your dog’s tags and/or microchip with up-to-date information. This increases your chances of being reunited with your dog if they get lost. Consider getting a Fi or Whistle tracker and charge the tracker. If your dog does run away, contact your local animal control and follow up daily.
Do A Post-holiday Safety Check
Do not forget to check for debris from fireworks even if you did not light your own fireworks as the debris can travel quite far.
