Have you considered starting a blog but are unsure if the time and effort will be worth it? There are many pros and cons to starting a blog.
Here are some thoughts I had about blogging before I started my blog:
- There’s no way I could make a living off blogging.
- No one will read what I have to write. It’ll be a waste of time to even get started.
- It’s too expensive to start a blog.
You may have similar thoughts as you consider if starting a website or blogging is right for you. Learning the pros and cons of blogging may help you make your ultimate decision on whether to start a blog.
Pros Of Blogging:
Become A Better Communicator and writer
By writing blog posts consistently, you will be able to refine your writing and communication skills. I have never been a fan of writing. But writing about my passion (dogs!) has made writing more fun for me and made me a better communicator.
Grow a community
Writing about what you are passionate about will help you find your tribe of people. They will naturally be drawn to you and before you know it you will have a community of like minded people. I am always excited when someone leaves a comment on one of my blog posts or ends up signing up for my newsletter.
Become an expert in your niche.
People will see you as an expert in your field if your website has helpful blog posts about a specific topic. You will become that go to person for them. In turn, you can leverage your authority by selling a product/service or offering a freebie to grow your email list. For example, I travel with my dog often and write blog posts that encourage people to fly and travel with their dogs. I have become an expert in my niche! I offer a free packing checklist for your dog that people can get by signing up for my newsletter. People are more than willing to do so after they that I am an expert at flying with my dog.
It can be a cheap investment.
All you truly need is a domain name and hosting site and you are set! That’s less than $100! In the cons section, you will see why blogging can become an expensive hobby.
Flexibility allows you to work on your blog anytime and anywhere.
It’s your website so you can work on it whenever and wherever you choose! Assuming you have wifi of course. This flexibility allows me to work full time while still growing my website. Starting a blog is still possible if you have children or a full-time job. You have the power to set your own schedule around your life.
Turn Blogging into a full time job
I know bloggers that make six-figures yearly. No joke, I have seen their income statements! It is very possible to make blogging a full time job that supports your lifestyle. Can you imagine make blogging your dream job! Keep in mind, getting to six-figures will take time and lots of knowledge.
Bring Traffic to your website
If you own a business you should have a blog as part of your website. Blogs bring in traffic to your website which in turn can get you potential clients.
Still unsure if blogging is for you? Here are 7 reasons blogging is important.
Cons Of Blogging:
You will need to invest more money to make a successful blog.
You can get a domain name pretty cheap and start hosting your site for a few dollars per month. But will that lead you to becoming a six figure blogger? Probably not. And definitely not on a fast track. To start a blog the proper way takes a good investment of money (about $400+). There are many expenses you may not think about from a domain name, hosting site, theme, email marketing platform, photographer, Canva, and Tailwind to name a few items I had to pay for to become a better blogger. Of course there are ways to go the cheaper route (many companies offer unpaid versions) but keep in mind you get what you put in.
It Takes knowledge and creativity
You may have a strong desire to start a blog. But if you don’t have the knowledge or creativity to write blog posts and be consistent then you are not going to be successful. You will need to provide your audience information they are seeking in a creative way. This is why people say blogging isn’t for the faint at heart.
Tech Is challenging
By far, building my website was the hardest part for me when I started my blog. Unless you are a coding expert or website builder, it’s going to take time to design your website to look like what you want. You may even need to learn to code (hello Youtube!)
You will not go viral as fast as you would like.
It would be nice if you could set up your website today and go viral tomorrow with ten thousand plus views. I promise you it will not happen because it takes time for Google to recognize your website and rank it high. Blogging is very different than social media in this respect. You can start today on Tik Tok and create a viral video by tomorrow. In the blogging world, you are committing to the long game.
