Healthy Pumpkin Spice Latte Recipe For Your Dog
It’s that time of year for the basic in us to come out and enjoy the Fall festivities. Usually the season is marked with Starbucks and Dunkin Donuts releasing their seasonal Pumpkin Spice Latte. Personally, I’m not the biggest fan of PSLs but I did want to make my dog, Teddy a dog friendly version. For the record, this is not a latte! You should never give coffee to a dog, obviously! This version of pumpkin spice latte is easy to make, healthy and can be made dairy free.
How To Make Pumpkin Spice Latte For Your Dog
This recipe will take you about five minutes to make and all you need is a blender! If you don’t have a mixer or blender on hand, you can simply mix all the ingredients with a whisk. For my dog-friendly PSL recipe, you will need canned pumpkin (not pumpkin pie filling), goat milk, greek yogurt, whipped cream and cinnamon. If your dog cannot handle dairy, do not add the greek yogurt and you can use a dairy free alternative like coconut milk or almond milk. Make sure you do not use pumpkin spice seasoning because nutmeg and other ingredients in pumpkin spice is toxic to dogs. You can always make your own whipped cream by using heavy cream to reduce the amount of sugar your dog consumes.
How To Make Dog Friendly PSL Dairy-Free
I understand some dogs have an adverse reaction to dairy products just like humans. That may include diarrhea, bloating and abdominal discomfort. To make this PSL dairy-free for your dog, simply remove the greek yogurt and goat’s milk. Substitute it with a dairy-free alternative such as coconut milk or almond milk. You can even substitute almond milk yogurt for greek yogurt. If you are unsure if your dog is lactose intolerant, give them a few tablespoons and see how they react.
What Makes PSL healthy?
Not only is this PSL recipe easy to make, it’s also healthy for our dogs! Pumpkin is low in calories and includes nutrients such as Vitamin A, C, E and beta carotene (what gives pumpkin the orange color). It also has antioxidants, which can help prevent certain cancers from developing. Another great benefit of pumpkin is that the fiber in it keeps our digestive system regular. Read more about the benefits of pumpkin in your dog here. Raw goat’s milk has probiotics that support digestion. The probiotics increase the amount of healthy bacteria in your dog’s gut allowing for improved nutrient absorption. Your dog will love the tasty treat and you will be happy that your dog is getting healthy nutrients.
