Easy Dog Treat Recipe Ideas for Fall
I sure can’t wait for Fall to officially get here! Until the weather starts to cool down in the south, I decided to make healthy homemade dog treats using butternut squash and kale for my dog. There is an abundance of pumpkin and squash in the Fall and I have a super easy recipe that requires only four ingredients. Personally, I made Teddy’s treats completely grain-free by using coconut flour but you can use any flour you currently have at home. Use Fall themed cookie cutters to make the dog treats more fun and festive! Your dog will be drooling for these kale and butternut squash dog treats and you can rest easy knowing they are healthy.
This year I started growing vegetables and herbs in my Lettuce Grow, which is a hydroponic system. City living isn’t exactly conducive to having a full vegetable garden. Which is why I opted to use a system that is vertical and takes up a small amount of space on my balcony yet produces a ton of vegetables. Bonus, it has a small carbon footprint. A hydroponic system is where plants are grown in a nutrient solution rather than soil. I have had great success with it, which lead to an abundance of kale. I made pesto and kale chips for myself and made my dog some homemade dog treats using the kale I grew on my urban farm.
Can Dogs Eat Kale?
You may be thinking, kale is healthy for humans so dogs should be able to eat it too. While doing research, I found that some experts suggest cruciferous vegetables may cause excess accumulation of heavy metals like thallium. Cruciferous veggies include kale and broccoli. On the other hand, other experts see it as a superfood that has many healthy nutrients such as fiber, antioxidants and carotenoids. So can your dog eat kale? They sure can in moderation but try to get an organic variety and introduce your dog to it slowly to avoid gastric issues.
